Birth of a supercity
This is another in a loose series I've been doing for the New York Times on creating a mega-city of more than 100 million in North China. In this piece, I visit Yanjiao, a suburb on the edge of Beijing, looking at whether these urban conglomerations can become cities or will remain warehouses for the capital's middle class, which can't afford to live in the city proper.
