A Concession Too Far?

In this NYT piece, I write about surprising new develops in Sino-Vatican relations.

This includes the decision by a papal delegation to ask 2 underground bishops to resign. What I think I didn't quite capture in the piece is that the person who brought this to light, Cardinal Zen of Hong Kong, had to travel to Rome in a personal capacity and wait in the public line to see the Pope--in other words, he's cut so far out of the picture that he has to approach him in this fashion. Surprising developments and one wonders if a backlash in the church isn't developing.
